The government is committed to expanding cooperation with democratic partners worldwide to ensure security in the Taiwan Strait and safeguard a free, open and stable Indo-Pacific, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Oct. 6.

Taiwan is preparing for the possibility China may launch a military attack, Wu said. Deepening the strategic partnership with the U.S. while strengthening the country’s defensive capabilities is a key strategy, he added.

Wu made the remarks during an exclusive interview with NBC News’ Raf Sanchez for “Morning Joe” from Taipei City.

As a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan is dedicated to maintaining the cross-strait status quo, Wu said. However, Beijing’s ambitions extend well past Taiwan into the East China and South China Seas, as well as into the Pacific and Indian Oceans, he added, calling on democratic allies around the world to stand in unity against authoritarian expansion and aggression.

Ukraine’s resistance is an inspiration, Wu said. The unity and resolve of Western democracies in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is likely to be a wake-up call for China, he added.

Wu also took the opportunity to thank the international community for its unwavering support, citing the visit of delegations from the U.S., countries in Europe and the European Parliament following China’s live-fire military exercises in August. (DL-E)
